The church and the whole of the Cistercian complex were built by the Litoměřice architect and builder Ottavio Broggio who was often commissioned by the Osek Cistercians to build for them. The construction of the Baroque complex started with St John's statues dating back to 1713 (F. A. Kuen).
The church was repaired in ca 1770, 102 years later a tower was built above the western gable; because of the construction of the tower, columns had to be added into the interior of the church (by a builder called Erler).
After 1945 when the inhabitants of the village changed, the church and the vicarage started to dilapidate. In 1965 the tower of the old church and the belfry were demolished along with the whole village. Luckily enough, other buildings within the complex were spared and they were thoroughly repaired at the beginning of the 1990s; the vicarage and the agricultural buildings were turned into a restaurant and a hotel. The church no longer serves its original purpose.
