The extensive ruins of Tolštejn Castle can be found 1.5 km from the peak of Jedlová in the Lusatia Mountains. The ruins are situated on a clinkstone mount (670 m above sea level) in a sandstone area. The name derives from the German name of Dohlestein (Jackdaw Castle). The castle was one of the fortified castles situated in the vast extensive estate of the Vartenberk branch of the House of Markvatic in the north of Bohemia. First mentions of the castle date back to the 13th century and we know the first owner of the castle - Vaník of Vartenberk. The Thirty Years War brought along destruction of the castle as
it was set on fire and pulled down. The Romantic Era of the 19th century resulted in a renewed interest in the castle and in 1866 a restaurant was built there.
