The first written record of the castle and the town come from 1330 when they were given by King John of Luxembourg to a Meissen nobleman Těma of Koldic, who was a loyal companion of the King on his journeys round Europe. The castle was built to protect tin mines, local towns and the important trade routes to Saxony. The House of Koldic ruled Krupka, with a brief interruption, until 1504. Another important owner of the castle was, for example, the Supreme Chancellor Albrecht von Kolowrat. When he died in 1510 he was buried in the church in Bohosudovy, which he had founded. In the 16th century the estate went through some bad times and it was gradually sold off. There were different owners all the time and often they did not even reside at the castle, which was slowly falling into disrepair. In 1576 it was the Emperor Rudolf II who became the owner of Krupka, followed by his brother Matthias who gave the castle and the estate to Adam of Šternberk. This was not met with understanding of the local townspeople who wanted Krupka to become a Royal town. During the Thirty Years War the castle turned into a ruin. The Šternberks had a new mining administration building constructed in 1695-1697. In the 19th century this building was turned into a romantic restaurant. In 1710 the Krupka estate was bought by Count František Karel Clary - Aldringen whose family owned the castle until 1918. The castle was slowly falling into disrepair and its ruins became a popular tourist destination in the 19th century for tourists coming from the nearby town of Teplice. It might have been the tourists who named the castle Rosenburg as hundreds of rose bushes can be found in the gardens around the castle and on the adjacent slopes. The castle was also visited by the famous German poet Johann Wolfgang Goethe. A memorial to commemorate his visit was unveiled by the local museum association in 1926. The renovation project of Krupka Castle was selected for one of the PHARE programmes, subsidized by the European Union. Building work commenced in 1999. During the first stage of the building work the Knights Hall was renovated and now it is used for various social and cultural events; it is also used as a wedding venue. Also the Lord's Manor has been repaired and now it houses a very cosy restaurant with a lounge; the castle building was also renovated and now it features a very stylish hall with a fireplace - a perfect venue for various celebrations and parties. During the second stage of the reconstruction of the castle, the upper floor of the Lord's House was turned into a comfortable hotel-style accommodation. The first guests came to stay here in summer 2003.
