Brana do Čech

Our starting point is the town of Ploskovice with its beautiful Baroque chateau and park, which are both open to the public. In the basement of the chateau we will find a "grotto" – an artificial cave with fountains creating a portal which opens the entrance to the lower section of the garden with a swimming pool and a little pond. After visiting the caste we take the road and trail No. 3066 towards Třebušín. We will travel through a slightly hilly terrain offering magical views of the surrounding peaks of ancient volcanoes, but especially the view of Kalich peak, where we are heading. From the village of Vinná we keep climbing sharply until we reach the village of Třebušín. This village is situated under the dominating Kalich peak, where we will find remains of a Hussite castle. That is where the name Kalich (Chalice) comes from.

In the middle of the village we may see the original chateau which has been converted into the Hubertus Hotel, and above the village square we will see the Church of St. Nicholas. We take a turn towards Řepčiceand keep climbing mostly uphill, where we visit another mountain of volcanic origin called Panna – the Virgin. In a picturesque village with folk architecture consisting of two-storey half-timbered houses, we take a right turn towards Homole and after a while make another right turn, onto a small road which transports less traffic, in the direction towards Haslice. An easy downhill ride is replaced with a short climb, after which we take another downhill ride through Haslice to the mountain village of Homole. In the middle of the village on a rocky hill we can find the classical Church of St. Pia. Those who prefer climbing through the terrain before climbing on a road, may take the red sign at the tourist crossroad and go towards "Pláň" (3 km). A short distance behind the village the red signs will leave the road and begin with a steep climb on a paved road. After a while the road will change into an unpaved field path. We will cross the road and continue with our sharp climb over a meadow towards the woods. Once in the woods the steep climb will relax here and there, but the forest road covered with vegetation will still test your riding skills and techniques thoroughly. However, even if you took the more comfortable option of riding on a road, you will not be able to avoid the sharp climb. From Homole we ride for 2 kilometres through hilly countryside around the Nová Ves village, until reaching the edge of the village of Suletice, where we turn right and begin a very sharp climb for 1.5 km all the way to the village of Pláň. From the Pláň crossroad we take a sharp ride down and follow the red signs all the way to Zubrnice. As soon as we come out of the woods into a small meadow, we will get a chance to take a first look at the valley in Zubrnice with Beech Mountain in the background before taking a left turn towards the Luční potok (Meadow Brook) educational trail. We continue going down through the terrain and along the edge of forests and meadows, and then along the edge of the forest again. At the next meadow we make a right turn. On the square in Zubrnice, which belongs to the urban heritage protection zone, we will see the Museum of Architecture (open air museum of the Czech Central Mountains) opposite the Church of St. Mary Magdalena. Here we may take a look at well-preserved exhibits and displays of folk architecture, which were brought here from other villages, and refresh ourselves in one of the numerous available restaurants before taking another trip. A the end of Zubrnice we may visit the small railway museum (exhibitions demonstrating the history of the local railroad Velké Březno – Verneřice – Úštěk). From Zubrnice we will climb towards the village of Týniště, where our road splits in two. We continue towards Touchořiny. For a while we get a chance to take a brake from our climbing activities and relax, but towards the end of our trip to Touchořin we must take a short climb again. The village offers well preserved houses built in folk architecture style. When we reach the road in the village we take a right turn towards Hlupice and begin with another steep climb. When we are about 1 km above Hlupice we will see a green tourist sign where we take a sharp left turn and continue to follow the green signs. Pay close attention to the green signs which will lead us away from the meadow and into the woods, where we mostly go down through forest terrain. In the village ofPřední Nezly we join an asphalt road and walkway on the main road coming from Lovečkovice. On this road we take a right turn. When we emerge from the forest the beautiful view of a colossal mountain called Sedlo (the Saddle) will open in front of us. This mountain is the highest in Verneřické středohoří (Verneřické Mountains). Before Horní Týnec the road will start to incline for a while, but after that we will take a comfortable ride down and through Horní and Dolní Týnec, around traditional folk houses offering beautiful views of the surrounding countryside. On the majority of our ride to Býčkovice we are comfortably going down the hill, and therefore, we have time to pay attention to the breathtaking landscape around us, offered by the Verneřická section of the Czech Central Mountains. In Býčkovice we leave the road, take a right turn and join another side road where we begin with another 1 km long climb, which will take us back to Ploskovice, where our trip ends. Total length 32.5 km.
