Brana do Čech

After visiting the beautiful Church of St. Peter and Paul in the village of Růžová (Pink) we follow the yellow tourist signs around the rustic houses towards Kamenická stráň (Kamenická Hillside). After less than one kilometre we take a turn and join a field road where we begin to follow the sings of the educational trail. The trail is equipped with many information signs and boards explaining new and interesting facts to visitors. We continue to move through an open countryside, where the silhouette of Růžovský Hill is presented in all its might and the surrounding hills, less than half the size of Růžovský Hill, are dwarfed in the background. After a while we enter the forest on Růžovský Hill and continue on a paved road along the foothills of this dominating landmark. We are passing the turn going to "Růžák", and from the information board we may learn about the geological creation of Růžovský Hill and about its fauna and flora. We leave the yellow sign trail and enter a section where we may see a light camouflaged bunker with an information panel showing us the sketch of the bunker and the description of pre-war fortification line.
The we continue along the blue sign and slowly begin to approach the biggest attractions of our trip. Descending through a fragrant forest into the valley of Kamenice, all the way down to the river, we will be amazed by probably the most romantic section of this region. After a short while we approach a small bridge, built here at the beginning of the 20th century. It was the first steel-reinforced construction in the former Austro-Hungarian Empire. Near the bridge you will find a "King's spruce", 180 years old and 27 m high. Behind it lies a picturesque meadow surrounded by woods and rocks. We are now soaking up the power of this magical moment and place and with blissful feelings continue towards the nearby Dolský mill.
On our way to Dolský mill we will see steps carved into the rock, and two wooden bridges. As we come out of the the forest shadows our eyes slowly adjust to the brightness of the sunlit stone remnants of the former mill. A mysterious silence surrounds us, only disturbed here and there by the murmur of the Kamenice River and birds' chirping. Here the fairy tale of the Pyšná princezna (Proud princess) was shot. Everyone surely remembers the popular scenes from this "national" fairy tale, but we will have a chance to examine this place on our own. Many years ago Dolský mill was an important establishment among all the mills in the region. Many bakeries and distilleries were built around this mill. It was later used as a restaurant at the lower ferry-boat station in the south of the Srbskokamenické ravine.
After a thorough examination of various hideouts and corners, and after a small snack, we will continue to follow the yellow signs on an old mill road, and while following our road we are informed about the creation and origin of the sandstone cliffs in this area. We climb up to the turn which takes us to the Kamenická viewing post. Our eagerness and impatience wins out as we march approximately 300 m towards the distant viewing post. The impressiveness and the widely open view is compelling as we slowly take a seat on the bench in a little bit of a flurry with a scary feeling. Nevertheless, we admire the rocky surroundings accompanied by the soothing sounds of the Kamenice River and by the sound of the blowing wind. We are listening closely to the surrounding sounds with such enthusiasm that for a moment we forget about heat fatigue and how tired we are. After we got our dosage of adrenaline we go back to the road turn and continue towards the village of Kamenická stráň (Kamenická hillside). We leave the forest, passing by picturesque folk houses with well-maintained greenery and follow the road for a while now. Towards the end of our route we go through beautiful forests towards Pastevní Hill, where the scenery opens up in front of us and we find ourselves at the highest point of this trip where we may enjoy the views of the countryside around Růžová (Pink). We return from the top back to the nearby village of Růžová, pleasantly tired and enriched with interesting experiences and knowledge.
