The starting point of our journey is the wine-making village of Velké Žernoseky located on the right bank of the Elbe River about 5 km from Litoměřice. In the village in front of the church, we will take a turn towards the railroad underpass and behind it we will see the beautiful and mighty sight of the Elbe River. Here we stay for a while to observe a ferry boat waiting for passengers and to sail across the wide Elbe River. A large bell announcing the time for the departure gets our attention. We will join the green tourist sign, which stays with us and follows us along the river bank and around the railroad. We pass the pier with boats and walk around scenic vineyards located on the slopes above us, until we reach Porta Bohemica. Porta Bohemica - the Bohemian Gate is also the name for a canyon-shaped valley through which the Elbe River enters the Czech Central Mountains. The section is about 4 km long and begins just outside the village of Velké Žernoseky. Our destination is the Calvary Scene, also known as the Three Cross Peak, which makes up and also enhances the Bohemian Gate. It is a steep rocky cliff on the right river bank with three crosses. You will also find here a natural reservation with rare fauna and flora. So we pass under a railway bridge and climb up on a steep path among trees, which brings us to the three crosses sight. Here we will enjoy the impressive views of the surrounding area and glistening water surface of the Elbe River. The rocks, slopes and silhouettes of the surrounding mountains are simply breathtaking. No wonder this scenery puts us in a mellow and blissful mood. In the distance we may recognize the cone-shaped peak of Lovoš and on the left side the silhouette of Radobýl. For a short while we can explore the surroundings and take a few minutes to absorb and remember the beautiful panoramas. Now we can get ready for our descent back to the banks of the Elbe River and to Velké Žernoseky. In the village we will take a look at the local church with the dominating tower and then we will stop for a while to observe the reconstructed chateau, where wine experts and connoisseurs may please their senses. We also learn here that the building of the castle is connected to an extensive wine cellar network. The main front facade was designed in a certain way. The entrance does not lead to the chateau rooms, but to the front cellar and then to the wine cellars, where you will see huge and fully functional oak barrels. We are leaving the village but before the end of our trip we will take a trip to the nearby Žernosecké Lake where we can cool down our warm bodies. This flooded former sand pit with three islands offers many recreational places with beaches where swimming, sunbathing and water sports lovers will certainly have a lot of fun. The north end of the lake is connected via a long canal with the Elbe River, from where various ships and boats sail. We came here just in time to see the ship Porta Bohemica effortlessly cutting through the lake. We are waving from the shore to greet the ship and before we know it, we are the ones making ripples on the calm waters of the lake.
