Brana do Čech

We start in Měděnec, a typical mountain town with an important mining history. The city has managed to preserve its checkerboard ground layout and its typical oblong square. Behind the town we will find a former iron ore mine. If you are interested, you may take a trip down and examine the mine from the inside. Above the city you will see a viewing hill called Mědník with the Chapel of the Immaculate Conception of the Virgin Mary, built in 1674. This landmark is visible from far away and offers panoramic views of the surrounding countryside. From Měděnec we will follow the road and trail No. 36 towards "Boží Dar" and "Klínovec", through a slightly hilly terrain until we reach the village of Horní Halže. Behind the village the road takes a right turn onto Kovařská Street where we will go as well. This little road take us mostly downhill through forests and peat-bogs until we reach the middle of Kovářská Street.
In the past Kovářská Street was inseparably linked with iron ore, which has been mined in these woods since the 14th century. In 1595, one of the first blast furnaces in Bohemia was built here. Today we are only reminded about the glorious history of iron production by the remnants and technological monuments, but we have to realise that during the 19th century, iron mining was virtually the only source of livelihood for the local people. The most famous local attraction, enticing not only enthusiastic fans of aviation, is the Museum of the Air Battle over the Krušné Mountains which took place here on September 11, 9. 1944. Since 1997 a regular annual meeting of former U.S. and German pilots has been held here. We continue through Kovářská Street towards "Černý Potok (Black Brook)" (6 km). In the valley of Černá voda (Black Water Brook) we travel mostly downhill. It is magnificent, maybe the nicest section of our entire trip. From the village of Černý Potok (Black Brook) we take an uphill ride /2-3/ on a moderately busy traffic road and continue to go up and over the hill. Then we begin to descend until we reach a V-shaped intersection, where we turn right towards "Kadaň" and "Chomutov" (also route No. 3003). Alternating climbs and descents, maximum difficulty /2/, will take us around the Přísečnice water reservoir. Its banks are covered with lush vegetation and occasionally interrupted with a rock or a pebble beach, calling for a cooling bath that is mostly appreciated during hot summer days. Unfortunately, that is not possible as this water reservoir is strictly used as drinking water storage. As we go around the reservoir we must take a rather busy road, appreciating the opportunity to leave this road and join a side road towards "Kovářská", where we begin with another climb /2-3/. We keep climbing for 2 km until we come to a farm house where we will find the "U Paloučku" (Near a Small Meadow) crossroad sign on the left side of the road by a yellow tourist sign. We follow the yellow sign towards "Měděnec" (4.5 km) and will soon have a chance to enjoy the first view of the mining tower with Mědník Hill and its chapel in the background. Until we reach the crossroad sign with a blue sign on it, we continue on the forest path surrounded by beautiful nature, sometimes offering nice views of the top of the Mědenec Mountain and the Měděnec mine. For the majority of our trip we go downhill, and for about one third we climb uphill. Towards the end of the trip the slope gets steeper /2-3/. We take a left turn and follow the blue signs towards "Měděnec". At the end we just walk down from the saddle under Mědník all the way to Měděnec, where our trip began and where it also ends
