The Březno archeological outdoor museum is located 3 km to the west of Louny, representing a completely unique monument of not just regional, but also national importance. Březno is one of the best researched archeological locations in our country. Long-term archeological research led by PhDr. Ivana Pleinerova took place between 1954 and 1981. Follow-up to the research was a scientific experiment in 1981 - 1992, the objective of which was to verify and describe possible methods of construction, inhabitation and use of prehistoric and early historic structures, while the methods, procedures and materials applied were as close as possible to the conditions typical for the given period.

The size of the reconstructed dwelling is equal to the original, and original techniques and replicas of the contemporary tools were used during the construction. Trial burning of pottery in the replica of a contemporary kiln was included in the experiment, as well as investigation of the durability and germination capacity of corn stored for a long time in storage pits. Dwelling conditions in the summer and winter periods were researched in the huts. Similar experiments had taken place in other European countries, but this was the first scientific endeavour of its kind what was then Czechoslovakia. The first reconstructed hut was a Slavonic dugout from the 6th century. The structure was used for experimental dwelling in winter.

A similar experiment took place in a Slavonic house from the 9th century in summer. Apart from the above-mentioned structures the open air museum offers a so-called "long house", a German hut from the Migration Period, corn storage pits and a pottery kiln from the 9th century. The museum was primarily a result of experimental archeology. The first visitors were allowed inside only after it had become part of the Regional Museum in Louny in the early 1990s. They are offered the possibility to have a look at the reconstructed structures, and to learn more about both the results of the experiments and the life of our ancestors. Topical accompanying programmes are organised during summer seasons in the outdoor museum that create the true atmosphere of a prehistoric and early medieval village. The visitors can not only see the inhabitants of the settlement wearing period costumes and doing their everyday chores, but also try many of the works performed first hand: blow a horn, grind flour and make pancakes, make fire and create a piece of jewellery. The archeological outdoor museum of Březno near Louny invites you. An expert guide - archeologist - can be pre-arranged for various age groups.
