Brana do Čech

A little village called Kamenická Stráň is a charming place in our country, where we immediately feel the fairytale atmosphere. We will find here a well-preserved complex of folk-style buildings. This complex consists mainly of unique family houses which are considered rare monuments of folk architecture.. Local villages were very populated in the past and people in this region lived mainly of their fields or worked in the woods, floated timber from forests, produced charcoal, tree pitch or yarn and woven products. Today, you will find here mostly cottage owners, who meticulously maintain their charming houses. From the village of Kamenická Stráň we will take a declining forest road and follow the yellow tourist sign. We are passing by picturesque cottages with well-maintained greeneries around them, and after a short moment we are entering woods where we are welcomed by an obelisk with a note theBohemian Switzerland National Park . We continue farther through the woods to the Kamenická viewing post, where we must decide whether to climb up to the viewing post now or later on our way back. Our eagerness and impatience wins out as we march approximately 300 m towards the distant viewing post. The view is impressive and the airy and wide open space is chilling and exciting. With butterflies in your stomach you sit on a bench and enjoy the rocky surroundings accompanied by soothing sounds of the Kamenice river and the wind blowing around. After we got our dosage of adrenaline we go back to the road turn and eager to see more we move forward towards Dolský Mill. We are comming out of the forest shadows and our eyes are slowly adjusting to the brightness of the sunlit stone remnants of a former mill. A mysterious silence surrounds us, only disturbed here and there by the murmur of the Kamenice River and birds' chirping. Here the fairytale Pyšná princezna (Proud princess) was shot. Memories and scenes from the fairytale suddenly come back and we are eager to explore this romantic place. Many years ago Dolský mill was an important establishment among all the mills in the region. Later it served as tourist restaurant down at the boat station in the southern section of the Serbia - Kamenice ravine. After exploring all kinds of corners and after a light snack, we will walk over two wooden bridges upstream of the river and follow the blue sign. After a short while we are approaching a small bridge, built here at the beginning of the 20th century. It was the first steel reinforced construction in the former Austro - Hungarian Empire. Near the bridge you will find King's spruce 180 years old and 27 m high. Behind it lies a picturesque meadow surrounded by woods and rocks. For a while we soak up the power of this magical place and with pleasant feelings we are slowly getting ready for our final climb through the woods and along the yellow sign and back towards the Kamenická viewing post, all the way to the Kamenická Stráň. If you still have time to visit another magical and fairytale-like building, go to see a brick Dutch type windmill from the 19th century near Růžová, located under the Petřín hill. Less fairytale-like but also very popular is the nearby Indian village Březová.
