The preserved key stone in the presbytery vault dates back to 1484. When Verneřice was elevated to the status of a town, the church was significantly enlarged in the Gothic-Renaissance style (probably in 1565), more renovation work followed after fires in 1709 and 1774. After 1945 the church started falling into disrepair, but as the only church in the neighbourhood it was repaired in the beginning of the 1970s (1973); parts of furnishings from the demolished churches in Merboltice, Valkeřice and the pilgrimage church above the town were moved here.
30 years later the state of the church is again precarious. A couple of years ago, the reconstruction work started but it has been rather slow and lengthy which has a negative impact on the construction itself and the furnishings.
