Brána do Čech

We shall begin this trip in the small and picturesque village of Dubice, where we will see valuable brick and half-timbered farmhouses scattered around the village square. From the Dubička crossroad we shall first go to see the Doerell viewing post. On our way we will catch a few glimpses of Dubický Church which was built here between 1589 and 1595 on a steep rocky hillside above the Elbe River. The Doerell viewing post offers beautiful views of Deblík on the opposite side but also of Libochovany, Plešivec, Kamýk, Calvary Lovoš etc. After returning from the viewing post we will follow the green signs towards Dolní Zálezly and take a look at the small Church of St. Barbara with a valuable late-Renaissance front facade. The church terrace offers wonderful views of Elbe Valley and also of Deblík and Varhošť on the opposite side.

The green signs will take us around cottages and gardens and around Dubický Hill. Now for a change, we may enjoy a nice view of the rocky cliff/foreland and Dubický Church, but from the opposite side. After about 1 km we will walk down to a turn which will take us to the Mlynářův kříž (Miller's cross) viewing post. On the protruding basalt rock called the Miller's stone we find a metal cross and a stunning view over Elbe Valley and the eastern part of the Czech Central Mountains. When we come back from the viewing post we will continue farther along the forest road before after a while, we encounter a yellow sign directing us to the village of Moravany. Behind the village we will climb uphill on a forest road. A short distance before the road coming from Stebno, we will see another turn going towards a viewing post facing the Elbe River called Skalky (Little rocks) (455 m). After soaking up the atmosphere and enjoying the views from Skalka, we go back to the road which runs along the edge of Podlešínská plain all the way to the Odbočka (Turn) Towards the Rocks crossroad. If you enjoy discovering secret and new places in the midst of dense forests and you are not scared of overgrown vegetation, nettles or thistles, you can continue to follow the blue signs. Your reward will be the view of a unique and lonely rock formation called Milenci (Lovers) (mountain climbing terrain) and a rock called Josefínka (Josephina), who according to legend, mourns here, after her rocky mate crashed into the river. After walking 0.5 km in the woods we will approach a turn going to the Milenci (Lovers) rock, 650 m away. The crossroad sign also warns you about the high difficulty level of this road. Now we are going sharply down on a path densely covered with vegetation towards small rocky formations, from where we enjoy a partial view of the Elbe River and of Vysoký Ostrý on the opposite side. To reach the Josefínka turn we must undergo a similarly challenging and long section as like that covered when going to see Milenci (Lovers). From Josefínka we will enjoy views over Elbe Valley and can also take note of the columnar difference of neo-volcanic rock found here. From these rocks we come back to the road with our yellow signs which will take us to the next turn towards Vaňovská skála (Vaňovská rock) (449 m). To reach this beautiful viewing post which offers views of Elbe Valley, Vaňov, Sunny slope and Vysoký and Malý Ostrý (Tall and Small Ostrý) we must walk for 300 meters across a meadow. The road will take us back to the village square in Podlešín where we take another turn and join a path leading towards Nad Vaňovem (2 km). Before we get to the crossroad we have to undergo a steep downhill walk and then follow the green signs for 500 m, until we reach Vrkoč Waterfall – a National nature monument. Vrkoč is a rocky ridge consisting of olivine basalt stone falling down towards the Elbe River near Vaňov, and whose separation columns are arranged like a fan. On Podlešínský Brook we will find 12 m high waterfall inside a basalt rock, which consists of 40 m high and up to 1 m wide rock pillars. Near the waterfall we will also find a turn going towards a rocky ridge overlooking Střekov Castle. Back to Podlešín we take the same road and then follow the road over the hill until we reach Stebno. To go back to Doubice we can either take the road or follow our tourist signs which pass above Stebno. Total length 23 km.
